What do fillers do?
Dermal fillers offer a way to restore volume in the face. Over time your face will naturally start to lose volume, and your skin will lose some of its natural elasticity. This is mainly what causes the visible signs of ageing: loose skin, lines and wrinkles. As we age, our bodies start to produce collagen at a slower rate, and struggle to renew skin cells as quickly. Of course, there are some things that can speed up that process, like exposure to UV (ultraviolet light), heavy drinking, smoking, stress and lack of sleep.
Unfortunately, we can’t prevent these visible signs of ageing. But we can make them a lot less noticeable. With dermal fillers, you can lift and restore the volume in your cheeks, temples, chin and other areas of the face. They can also be used to reshape your face, giving you a fuller, more youthful appearance without the need for invasive surgeries.
We use the Aliaxin range of dermal fillers produced by Ibsa. They are well researched and they encourage and support their clinicians to keep up to date with new techniques.
An alternative to fillers would be the Profhilo treatment, which is also used to smooth out skin for a more youthful look.
What is in Dermal fillers?
All of the Aliaxin range are hyaluronic acid. This is a natural constituent of skin, and is essential for making your own collagen and elastin. As we age, we produce less of it so our skin starts to sag and wrinkle. To make the hyaluronic acid more stable, it is produced so that the molecules crosslink together making it more difficult for your body to dissolve it. The Aliaxin range has various levels of cross linking to produce different stiffness of filler. We use the ‘stiffer’ fillers for cheek lifting and chin/jaw remodelling, and the ‘softer’ fillers for lips and tear tough.
How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
Dermal fillers are injected into your skin, and help to smooth our lines and wrinkles. They also hydrate your skin, leaving it looking fuller and firmer than before. The results are instant – you’ll be able to see them before you leave the clinic – and they generally last between six and nine months. They are made from Hyaluronic Acid, which might sound scary, but it’s a natural substance that’s found inside the human body, and is responsible for drawing water to the skin and giving it its plump appearance. As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid in our bodies reduces, which leads to the dreaded fine lines and wrinkles. These are particularly visible around the nose, mouth, lips, cheeks and forehead.
Lip remodelling
Lips are a very delicate area to place fillers and we have all seen some awful ‘trout pouts’ where far too much filler is used and the poor recipient ends up with over inflated lips.
Well done lip fillers should be an enhancement of your natural features. For a simple lip enhancement, we would use one of the softer of the Juvederm range to gently restore what has been lost. If you have lost a lot of lip volume, we might need to use a layered technique with a stiffer filler in the base, and the softer filler above. This way we can achieve a natural look.
Cheek and temple lift
As we age, the natural fat pads in our cheeks drop due to gravity and loss of collagen, we then end up with deep nose to mouth lines which can make you look tired. The temples hollow out which causes the eyes to droop.
By using filler to lift the cheek and temples, we can reduce the appearance of the nose to mouth lines and lift the corners of the eyes in a subtle and natural way.
